Proof of Stake (PoS) is a consensus mechanism used to verify and validate transactions. It was created in 2011 as an alternative to the Proof of Work (PoW) mechanism used by Bitcoin. Crypto staking pools take a collaborative approach that allows users to each stake a smaller amount. Each pool creates a unique smart contract detailing terms, responsibilities, and reward distribution. Also known as SaaS, this option allows you to stake your coins but outsource node operations to someone else on your behalf.
Why is crypto staking important?
“Each blockchain network typically has one to two official wallet apps that support staking. For example, Avalanche has the Avalanche wallet, and Cardano has Daedalus and Yoroi wallets,” Trakulhoon points out. Staking is a unique feature allowed with some cryptocurrencies. However, a staker has to keep staked coins in the same address, since moving them breaks the lock-up period, which consequently causes them to lose staking rewards. If everything is accurate, the validator adds the block to the ledger and receives the block rewards and transaction fees. However, if a validator adds a block with the wrong data, its staked holdings will be penalized.
There are also non-staking options for earning on your crypto, including lending programs and decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. Keep in mind that the Web3 wallets are just interfaces to staking services and do not control the underlying protocols. Give preference to well-established blockchains like Ethereum and Solana and do your own research before taking financial risks. Now that you’ve learned about cryptos you can stake, the next step is to pick one and buy it. This may seem straightforward, but it’s important to consider where you’ll make the purchase. The simplest option is to choose one of the cryptocurrency exchanges what is the distinction between the phrases capitalize and depreciate with a built-in staking feature.
What Is a Staking Pool?
If a validator acts maliciously, there are financial repercussions, aka slashing, and a validator can lose some or all of their coins. However, once coins are staked, they are locked, and you cannot use them for anything else until you withdraw them. The Ascent is a Motley Fool service that rates and reviews essential products for your everyday money matters. This part of the staking process depends on the crypto you bought and the exchange where you bought it. Ethereum (ETH) is also in the process of transitioning to the proof-of-stake model. You can lock-up a variety of tokens or contribute your stake to a validator pool on a token’s native chain in the Crypto.com DeFi Wallet. In a way, users are ultimately contributing to a process that is critical to the security and operation of the blockchain. In order to understand how staking works, let’s first look at what Proof of Stake (PoS) blockchains are.
In contrast, for crypto staking, the cryptocurrency is locked up in order to participate in running the blockchain and maintaining its security. Start by learning more about any proof-of-stake cryptos that catch your eye, including how they work, their staking rewards, and the staking process with each one. Next, you can look for the crypto you want and buy it on cryptocurrency apps and exchanges.
Different cryptocurrency lock-up options have different APRs and can be compared. If going down this route, ensure that the validator has never had any slashing offenses, has high uptime, low commission, and a high number of crypto already staked. Also, certain wallets are integrated with blockchains to allow direct staking.
For example, at the time of this writing, you can earn 4.55% APY on your Solana holdings. In staking, the right to validate transactions is baked into how many coins are “locked” inside a wallet. However, just like mining on a PoW platform, stakers are incentivized to find a new block or add a transaction on a blockchain. Apart from incentives, PoS blockchain platforms are scalable and have high transaction speeds. It is similar to crypto mining in the sense that it helps a network achieve consensus while rewarding users who participate. Crypto staking rewards are the digital equivalent of interest or dividends, and they can allow owners to earn passive income while holding onto their underlying assets.

Choose a supported deposit method (depending on region) to fund the account with a fiat currency like USD or EUR. There are a vast number of cryptocurrencies and crypto exchanges that allow staking, and even some crypto wallets support crypto staking, too. Like staking on other crypto exchange platforms, users earn an annual percentage yield (APY) for participating with their crypto holdings.
But one thing to note is that these pools are typically built through third-party solutions. For example, trying to create a fraudulent block of transactions that didn’t happen. According to Staking Rewards, more than $132 billion are locked up in supporting proof of stake.
